Chicago

Dear Colleagues and Community Members,

I am writing to express my enthusiasm for our upcoming "Rep Chicago" Spread The Word Tour, which will focus on the rich history and significance of Chicago's colleges and churches in the context of our city's complex racial past and ongoing journey toward equity.

This tour is a vital step in our mission to raise awareness about the need for reparations and to foster meaningful dialogue about racial justice in Chicago. By exploring our city's educational institutions and houses of worship, we aim to illuminate the intricate ways in which these pillars of our community have both contributed to and challenged systemic inequalities over the years.

Our college tour will showcase how institutions of higher learning have played pivotal roles in shaping Chicago's intellectual landscape, while also examining their historical stances on racial issues. We'll explore how these campuses have evolved to address past injustices and their current efforts to promote diversity and inclusion.

The church tour will take us through Chicago's architectural gems, many of which stand as testaments to the city's diverse cultural heritage. We'll delve into the role of faith communities in both perpetuating and combating racial segregation, and highlight their ongoing efforts in the fight for social justice.

A key component of our tour will be engaging with current reparations initiatives in Chicago, including:

1. The recently established Reparations Task Force, created by Mayor Brandon Johnson's Executive Order 2024-1, which aims to develop a Black Reparations Agenda for the city.

2. The ongoing work of the Illinois African Descent-Citizens Reparations Commission, which is examining the intergenerational impact of enslavement and racial discrimination.

3. Community-led efforts and grassroots organizations working towards reparations and racial justice in Chicago.

We will provide opportunities for participants to learn about these initiatives, understand their progress, and offer feedback on proposed reparations strategies. This engagement is crucial for ensuring that our community's voices are heard in shaping the future of reparations in Chicago.

I believe this tour will be an eye-opening experience for all participants, fostering a deeper understanding of Chicago's history and inspiring action towards a more equitable future. It's an opportunity to confront our past, celebrate our progress, and recommit ourselves to the work that lies ahead.

I encourage everyone to join us on this important journey of discovery and reflection. Together, we can spread the word about the importance of reparations and work towards healing the wounds of our city's past.

Let's make this tour a powerful step towards a more just and equitable Chicago.

Sincerely,

Paper Torn

Executive Summary

The Reparations College and Church Tour in Chicago is an innovative educational program designed to explore the city's complex history of racial segregation, housing discrimination, and their lasting impacts on Black communities. This multi-day tour aims to provide a comprehensive, immersive experience that combines visits to historically significant college campuses and churches with screenings of the documentary series "Shame of Chicago: Shame of the Nation." The program will engage participants in expert-led discussions, community service opportunities, and in-depth explorations of Chicago's architectural and cultural landmarks.

By partnering with local universities, churches, community organizations, and institutions such as the Chicago Architecture Center and the Chicago Association of REALTORS®, the tour will offer a nuanced perspective on the city's past and present struggles with racial equity. Participants, including students, educators, community leaders, policymakers, and interested members of the public, will gain insights into the role of educational and religious institutions in both perpetuating and challenging racial inequalities. The tour will also highlight current initiatives for equity and reparations in higher education and the broader community.

A key component of the program will be the incorporation of expert-led discussions featuring scholars, activists, and community leaders who will provide historical context and contemporary perspectives on racial equity issues and reparations. These conversations will be supplemented by comprehensive educational materials and a curriculum that can be used in schools and community groups beyond the tour itself.

Funding for this initiative will be sought through grants from educational institutions, foundations focused on racial equity, and local government initiatives supporting reparations efforts. The expected outcomes of the tour include increased awareness of Chicago's history of racial segregation, enhanced understanding of reparations concepts and potential implementations, strengthened community connections, and inspiration for participants to engage in local reparations and social justice efforts. Ultimately, this tour program seeks to educate, inspire, and foster meaningful dialogue about pathways to a more equitable future in Chicago and beyond.
